Victim’s Anger……..by Susan

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

During the past several days I have felt so much stress, anger and frustration because my 25 year old son is a bank teller who had a gun pointed inches from his face during a local bank robbery.

Needless to say, my son has been going through a lot of uncomfortable feelings…..one of which is anger.  I believe it is victim’s anger.  I think he is starting to feel a little better and will heal in time.  Everyone in town has been asking him questions.  Hopefully that will die down soon.  Small towns quickly find something new to buzz about.

During the robbery my son was told not to touch the alarm button or he would get his head blown off!   He followed directions and kept everyone safe by doing so.  I’m very thankful for that.   I would have been shaking in fear but he was calm on the outside.

My son and another teller were able to give a perfect description of the robber (who was so dumb that he didn’t cover his face or bring anything to put the money in. )  The robber was caught on Friday and is now behind bars….thank God!

I had a nightmare the night before the robber was apprehended. In it the robber came to our home to cause trouble for all of us.  I woke my husband up twice wimpering in my sleep.

I wish I could visit that bank robber in jail and express my anger at him because of what he did to my son.   I haven’t felt so much stress for quite some time.  Making my son a victim of a crime was a terrible thing, in my opinion.  These things shouldn’t happen to anyone, but it does,  and I feel very angry about it.   Feeling like a victim doesn’t feel good at all.  You feel helpless and then you feel angry, very angry.

My son is a smart and sensitive person who never in a million years deserved to be treated this way…..and yet he was.   It makes me so mad!   It definitely makes my son mad too.  It has been difficult to contain my anger, which is why I thought writing about it might help.  I’ve certainly talked about it with friends and relatives and so has my son.

Talking and writing are my two best therapies when it comes to dealing with negative feelings.   I guess that’s why David and I started this blog.   Thank you so much for your support.

Diet and Sleep

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

The food you eat not only contributes to the quality of your weight and general health, but also on how well you sleep. Some foods help you sleep better. While others can make sleep difficult or even impossible.

Foods that improve sleep include fruits, green leafy vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, and mushrooms. Even spices such as dill, sage and basil help with sleep problems.

Drinking milk before bedtime, a common method to aid sleep, is actually effective. Milk actually contains tryptophan, which can be converted to serotonin, the hormone that controls sleep. Honey, turkey, egg whites and tuna also contain tryptophan, which are good night time snacks.

Alternatively, caffeine-rich food and beverages should be avoided right before going to bed. This includes coffee, tea, chocolate, cocoa, soft drinks and some medications. Some foods that are rich in tyramine can also affect sleep. Tyramine actually causes the release of a substance that stimulates the brain keeping you awake. This is found in bacon, cheese, sugar, ham or tomatoes.

Spicy foods, on the other hand, may cause gastrointestinal reflux or heartburn. While sweet or greasy foods can also cause indigestion and bloating. And though alcohol can make you sleepy, it actually upsets sleep patterns later in the night resulting to frequent waking in the night to urinate.

Even how much and when you eat affect sleep patterns. It is best to keep the last meal of the day light. Eating too much or heavy meals before sleeping may cause indigestion, heartburn and discomfort. It is recommended to start with a hearty breakfast, the main meal of the day around noon, and a light supper early in the evening.

You may also take vitamins and supplements to aid sleep. Calcium and magnesium helps induce sleep. Calcium-rich foods include milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, sardines, salmon, broccoli, tofu, egg, and calcium-fortified food. Magnesium is found in nuts, almonds, cashews, beans, and spinach. Vitamins B6 and B12 are often beneficial and used in the treatment of insomnia. Some of the foods that contain Vitamin B6 are liver, meat, brown rice, fish, butter, wheat germ, whole grain cereals, and soybeans. Foods rich in Vitamin B12 include some plant milks, some soy products and some breakfast cereals.

Be careful on what foods you eat. It can directly affect the way you sleep. By improving your eating habits, you will have a better chance at a good night’s sleep.

Healthy Breakfast Ideas

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

Healthy breakfastBreakfast is the most important meal of the day. I’m sure that you heard that all the time when you was a kid. But, it is true. Breakfast is one of those meals that people today tend to skip. I really don’t understand this. Maybe this is why people are so uptight in the morning. They have the shakes from not eating. You might have a busy lifestyle, but you need to make sure that you have time for breakfast. Breakfast is one of those meals that you must eat. I don’t think there is any choice about it. I know that most people who do eat breakfast, tend to be the type that run out of the house with a donut in their hand. This really isn’t a good idea. I don’t know why people jump to the sugary breakfast foods. I guess it is why people drink coffee. They need that bolt of energy to wake them up. Or they think that maybe they can avoid eating a good meal by eating something full of sugar. After all, they feel energetic after eating a bunch of sugar.

Have you ever noticed how hard it is to wake up at work? Have you noticed how during the day you get tired? This is because you aren’t getting the right foods for breakfast. You don’t realize how important this meal is. Every day you should have a good meal for breakfast?
What are some good things to eat for breakfast? First, let’s start off with what you shouldn’t eat.

Don’t eat donuts. For the reasons we spoke above.

Don’t eat any cereals that are loaded with sugar. This is nothing more than empty calories. They don’t offer you anything. Not only that, but too much of this and you will gain weight. Have you ever noticed how sluggish you feel before lunch? This is because you are eating too much sugar!

Don’t eat a ton of fried foods. Don’t eat a bunch of bacon, fried eggs, and some french toast. The added fat will weigh you down.

Don’t eat those pasties that come in the boxes. These are loaded with sugar. They don’t offer you anything that is actually good for you. They rob you of all the things that you should be eating.

Don’t load up on coffee. Don’t think because coffee can give you energy, that you can drink it instead of eating. Now, what you should be eating.

Eat a cereal that is low in sugar. Cereal with milk is a great breakfast. It is a good all around meal.

Try a new egg sandwich. People seem to love the egg sandwiches at fast food restaurants. Why not make one at home? You can put some cheese or some lean ham on yours. Use your imagination, these are fun to make.

Eggs are good for breakfast. I’m not going to go through the whole mess about how they say eggs are bad for you. Don’t buy it. Eat them, but eat them in moderation.

Pancakes. These can be great from time to time. Try to get yourself one of those griddles that you don’t need to add fat too. If you get one of those, you will be able to eat these more often. To cut down on calories. Instead of using butter and syrup, put fresh fruit on yours. I love eating mine with fresh fruit on top of them.

Juice is great for breakfast. Get that pick me up that you need without the caffeine of morning coffee. You don’t have to worry about getting the shakes if you drink too much juice. Though, you might get the shits, but not the shakes.

Old fashioned toast. This is still a great thing to eat. Just don’t load it up with too much butter or other things.

Oatmeal. I know that most of you probably hated oatmeal when you were a kid. But, this is some great stuff. Add some milk and a bit of sugar and you have a breakfast that will stick to your ribs.

Fruit salad can be great for breakfast. I love things that taste refreshing that don’t take all day long to make. Throw your favorite fruits together and call it a meal! There you go. A good breakfast isn’t as hard as you might think that it is. All you have to do is stay away from the drive through window and you will be fine. Also, don’t eat those pasties in a box. They are nothing but junk food.

The Need To Be………….by David

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

On bad days when I try to get out and do something such as go to the store or ride my bike,  I soon feel the need to get back to my appartment.   Sometimes I cover the windows with my draped afgans and hybernate.

It feels almost like my identity is being absorbed when I am out and about.  It takes a long while to feel better after I’ve returned home.  It’s a terrible feeling which I am sure
many people have…..low self esteem which can go even lower when around people.  It seems like a loss of my self that leaves my physique grasping at anything just to feel better.  I
will smoke more,  eat a lot more, and be very restless.

I try to keep busy and also try to sleep as much as I can.  It really does feel as if “I” don’t exist.

You Could Actually Be Overweight Even If You?re Slim

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Understanding what makes someone obese isn’t as simple as just looking at someone and determining that they are overweight or not by the way they look. There are some people who are overweight who appear to be slender and others who look like they are overweight but are actually right where they should be when it comes to health.

There are people who appear slender who could actually be at higher risk for obesity related disease than those who are overweight. The reason behind this is that the risk for things like heart disease comes from the amount of fat stored around vital organs not the over all fat of the person, though this of course is a contributing factor. A slender person may actually have more fat around their vital organs and therefore be at higher risk than someone who is obese.

This just goes to show that people need to find what is healthy for them. Perhaps someone who has the appearance of being overweight could actually be quite active and have less internal fat than someone who appears to be slim but does not do any physical activity. For example, a professional football player that plays in the line backer or tackle position may appear to be quite large and have a high weight. Their internal fat levels however might be significantly lower while maintaining the same BMI as someone who appears to be slender but that doesn’t participate in physical activities. The slender person may have the same BMI but the internal fat content of that person’s body may be significantly higher. This is why it is important to determine what works best for your particular body. If being slightly overweight is actually what provides the healthiest median for you then that is where you should be or if being slender is where you are healthiest then you should maintain or reach that goal.

When determining what is healthy for a person one can not rely strictly on simple numbers, over all feel is also important. Obesity isn’t as simple as being overweight or not, it is a complex disease that deals with the internal fat content of a particular person and that changes from person to person. What is obese for one person could be entirely healthy for another. Take the time to consider where you feel the healthiest and do your best to maintain that condition.

Not Happy Being Obese

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

obesity-4938.jpgThis article is for people who are obese but still claim they are happy despite their weight. Being obese will lead to a much shorter life and also decrease the quality of life you can have.

It has been proven that overweight people are less likely to get a job than a person who is not overweight. It’s also known that obese people don’t get partners as attractive as those who aren’t obese. I could go on for ages about how slimmer people enjoy better things from life then those who are obese.

Despite all the things mentioned above many larger people still say “I’m happy the way I am”, this may be true for a select few, but the majority are just kidding themselves. And the only person who suffers from this is the one in denial. There are many reasons you may say you are happy when you actually aren’t. But the sooner you look at yourself in the mirror and say “I’m not happy with my weight” the sooner you can start on your road to losing weight. This way of thinking is much the same as that of alcoholics. Until you face up to the problem you can’t tackle it.

Apart from medical problems there is no excuse for being obese. There are so many products and services available that you can start to lose weight now and live a longer and happier life. There are books, fitness DVDs, free online advice, diet pills, shakes and advice lines that can all help you. Like I said, there is no excuse!

This article is not designed to offend or wind up any obese people. It is for your own benefit, if you are actually unhappy with your weight and want to lose some of it then owning up to this is the first step. You only live once and you don’t want to regret not losing weight in years to come.

Yoga – The Superior Path To Health

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

When you reduce your weight by taking a pill or following a diet, your weigh reduction might be only a temporary achievement.

To get permanent results, you have to grow as a person.

Remember that extra weight always has a reason. From we are borne someone puts something into our mouths when we are uneasy or cry, just to comfort and quieten us.

This is a strategy that works, and as time goes by, we very quickly adopt this strategy of filling our mouths with something when we are emotionally upset or uneasy. And it keeps working as efficiently as ever. It is like a pill that works all the time, whatever the emotional problem, just like when we were children.

But it has all the side effects of whatever narcotic you could care to mention. You get addicted, because the problem you ate away is not solved,- it is just packed down beneath a temporary surface layer of food bliss in our psyche, so that you don’t feel it any longer. But once the intoxication recedes, you feel the need to eat again, because now you feel uneasy again, and now you probably don’t even remember what the problem was all about,- you just feel uneasy. The problem is still there.

We are in a habit of not solving any problems on the personal level, and not learning anything about ourselves, and that makes us incapable, and liable to use the same dysfunctional strategy whatever problem arises in our lives. It is all on auto pilot, that is, a subconscious strategy.

And the body weight just keeps building. We don’t even know that we eat, just like a smoker discovers he has just had a smoke after it has turned into toxic gases. It was all on autopilot.

The strategy just doesn’t push the right button. If we need comfort, we should go and get some true and healing comfort from someone or something we care about or believe in, and from whom or whatever we feel ready to receive comfort.

If we need to reduce anxiety, what we actually need is not food or nutrition, but a calming influence of some sort on the emotional level. It could be a piece of music, a meditation, some exercise, some self help to build qualifications and skills, without which we feel insecure. -And so on and so forth. A slowing and steadying of breathing is necessary through a good and efficient strategy.

We need a lot of strategies to be able to meet different challenges in life, not just food. And food should be used for nutrition, and not for any and all types of other purposes.

So, what has yoga to do with all of this?

Well,- a whole lot, I can tell you.

Yoga is a system to increase your awareness, your inner strength and your personal integration through postures, movements, breath-cultivation et cetera. As you keep doing your exercises, what was previously experienced as problems might just evaporate, just like darkness fades when the sun rises.

The process is not to chase or to fight the darkness, but to bring in the light.

What was a problem while you lived in the dark, that is without full awareness, with a lower state of consciousness, are not at all a problem when you gradually turn on the light, or increase your awareness. It is just seen as a perfectly normal situation in life,- a situation with which you are at home. A rope on the floor is not a snake ready to attach you any longer,- it is just that,- a rope. No heart palpitations, no sweating, no autonomic reactions, and no need for food, nor pills nor medications, and no dysfunctional strategies of any kind.

To reduce weight through yoga is fast, efficient and permanent, and comes as a consequence of your own inner growth of awareness and consciousness, your own inner state of integration, which should always be the prime focus, whatever problem you want to solve. Improve the problem solver, and the problem might just redefine itself to some sort of normal phenomenon in life, and not an experience that calls for any distraction, autopilot strategy, subconscious strategy or anything else that could compromise your feeling of self worth and feeling of mastery in life.

Yoga is not designed to lose weight,- it is designed for perfect health, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

When you grow on all levels, and fat just evaporates from your body as a natural consequence, your weigh loss will be permanent, and you will finally be out of the jojo-experience of trying one diet or incomplete strategy for weigh loss after another.

You will then be free to fill your life with more meaningful pursuits that chasing a mirage of some future, slim body.

You will experience life without the perspective of gaining weight again, and staying healthy for the rest of your life.

You seek health on all levels, and you receive a slim and fit body in return, among a lot of other benefits.

If you seek just a slim body, you might get that, but you won’t necessarily get a healthy body. Some diets are very unhealthy, yet very effective for slimming your body. A deadly sick person also get slim, but that is a bi product of being deadly sick, not a result of a healthy strategy. A thin body should be a result of having a a healthy body, not a sick one, due to improper and faulty diet.

Getting your desired end result in terms of body weight as a bi product of your inner growth and your overall state of health is a far superior strategy to all the other strategies available today.

What You Should Know About Obesity As A Deadly Disease

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Did you know that obesity is now classified as a disease and that physicians are compelled by medical ethics to offer treatment for all diseases? Weight control experts believe that obesity carries medical risks so severe that for a physician to delay offering treatment would be a form of malpractice. What does your doctor say about your weight?

Not only will you reverse a multitude of disease risks if you lose weight, you will acquire a new sense of self-esteem and improved quality of life. Certainly, to be able to find and utilize the opportunity to achieve weight loss and the attendant benefits is your desire.

Obesity and Diseases

Excessive body fat is associated with increased risks of disease. For example, even a modest weight gain during adulthood brings an increased risk of diabetes among women. Excess weight has been named as the cause of up to half of all cases of hypertension, and thus increases the risk of stroke.

Often weight loss alone can normalize the blood pressure of an over weight person; some people who suffer from hypertension can tell you exactly at what weight their blood pressure begins to rise. Being over weight also triples a person’s risk of developing diabetes and all of its associated ills. If hypertension or diabetes runs in your family you urgently need to attend to controlling body over weight.

The unhealthy risks of over weight are so many that it has been declared a disease. Obesity, in addition to diabetes and hypertension predispose other health risks such as high blood lipids, Cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea (abnormal pauses in breathing during slept)

Other serious health conditions associated with Obesity are: Osteoarthritis, abdominal hernias, cancer, varicose veins, gout, gallbladder disease, arthritis, respiratory problems (including pickwickian syndrome, a breathing blockage linked with sudden death) liver malfunction, complications in pregnancy and surgery, flat feet, and even a high accident rate.

Moreover, after the effects of diagnosed disease are taken into account, the risk of death from other causes remains almost twice as high for people with lifelong obesity as for others.

Rate of weight loss

Successful long term weight control requires controlled low loss of body fat without cyclic “on-again off-again” dieting. Losing a pound a week helps maintain muscle while preferentially losing fat tissues.

Commit to exercising for life

Exercising for life helps keep the body engine revved up, so that more calories are burned by muscle and less insulin is required to dispose of elevated blood sugar following meals. Even a daily half-hour of vigorous walking will help maintain weight.

Commit to changing eating habit.

Your diet is the basis of your health. Eating right or wrong makes you either over weight or drives your over weight to obesity levels. Let your nutritionist or doctor guide you, so that you consume only the necessary calories and at the required intervals

BODY MASS INDEX

(BMI) is a standard for body weight based upon the measurements of height and weight. This is one of the most useful relationships; it can be used to asses health risks associated with overweight and it can be used as a therapeutic guide. There is a high degree of correlation between BMI and body fast. BMI is based upon surveys of lean adult between the age of 20 and 29 to calculate the index of fatness.

BMI = Weight(kg)/height(m)2

Take care of your weight before it becomes a source of serious health problems.

What Does the Best Carb Blockers Contain?

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

If you are looking for a way to successfully block carbohydrates in your diet then a good carb blocker may be of benefit to you. But just how does someone go about finding the best carb blocker? In this article I will look at some points that need to be considered in order to find the best carb blocker to help you reduce the amount of calories you body retains.

Firstly probably the most important thing to think about when looking for a good carb blocker is to select one which has been proven to work through clinical studies that have been carried out. There are many products readily available both online and through your local health store but only a small number of carb blockers are proven to be effective. An example of a proven carb blocker is the Dietrine phrase 2 carb blocker.

Secondly, look for carb blockers which contain chitosan. This is a dietary fiber which comes from chitin and is found in the outer shells of shellfish and is proven to be effective for weight loss as well as for lowering cholesterol levels. This fiber causes fatty oils to be bonded and not be absorbed into the body through the intestinal walls and so travels the digestive system and can be expelled more easily. In clinical studies carried out, people using chitosan were found to lose 8% of their excess body weight over a 4 week test period.

Another ingredient you should look for in a good quality carb blocker is Gymnema Sylvestre. This is an Indian Ayurvedic herbal medicine which has been used for 2 thousand years for the treatment of diabetes and other problems. But it is only in the last few years it has been seen as a great way of preventing calories from being absorbed into the body and thus stored as fat. In clinical research it is suggested that this herb prevents the absorption as well as the production of glucose molecules through the intestinal tract. Although it is not a cure or a substitute for correct dietary habits it may well be beneficial in helping to regulate blood sugar levels in diabetics.

So it is important that when looking for the best carb blocker available today you should keep in mind the points provided above.

Weight Loss Surgery – 5 Questions You Need to Answer

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

1. Am I a Candidate for Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric weight-loss surgery is not for everyone. In most cases, bariatric surgeons will only recommend this type of surgery for “morbidly obese” individuals. I know that’s not a pleasant phrase, but it’s one used by the medical community to describe a certain level of weight problem. Morbidly obese means that the person’s obesity is a legitimate threat to his or her health and wellbeing.

Typically, doctors will only start the review process when a person’s body mass index (or BMI) is greater than 40. Body mass index is a measurement that takes into account a person’s gender, height and weight. When a person has a BMI of 40 or greater, doctors will generally proceed with the assessment to determine a patient’s candidacy for bariatric weight-loss surgery.

2. What Type of Surgery?
Another decision you’ll have to make up front is the type of bariatric weight-loss surgery you want to pursue. Over the last few years, there have been many advancements in the field of bariatric surgery. The use of laparoscopic techniques, for instance, provides a minimally invasive alternative to full surgery in some cases. New products have also come onto the scene, such as the LAP-BAND system. So before you proceed with this list of questions, you’ll need to research your surgical options and choose the one that’s best for you.

3. Do I Understand the Effects?
Bariatric surgery has long-term effects, and these effects will differ based on what type of surgery you undergo. For instance, with gastric bypass surgery, your capacity for food consumption will be greatly reduced. That’s the whole point of the surgery, and it’s more or less a permanent effect. With some of the new lap band surgeries, on the other hand, the stomach’s capacity can be altered post-surgery by making adjustments to the band. This type of surgery can even be reversed, in most cases. So before you choose a type of bariatric weight-loss surgery, be sure you know the long-term effects of each one.

4. Do I Know the Risks?
Every type of surgery has risks, and bariatric surgery is no different. The risks will vary depending on which type of weight-loss surgery you pursue (which is why the type of surgery was question #2). Once you decide on a type of bariatric weight-loss surgery, you need to learn about the risks associated with that surgery. Do some research online to find out what type of risks you might face, as well as any percentages / statistics you can located. Only when you understand these risks can you make an informed decision about bariatric weight-loss surgery.

5. Which Doctor Should I Choose?
Once you have (A) determined you are a viable candidate for bariatric surgery, (B) researched the different types of bariatric surgery, and (C) learned about the long-term effects and possible risks, you are ready for the next logical step in the process. You are ready to ask question #5, “Which doctor should I choose?”

In many regards, choosing a bariatric surgeon is like choosing any other surgeon. You want to find a surgeon who is experienced in the field, as well as one who makes you comfortable. Some surgeons are highly skilled but lack a pleasant “bedside manner.” While other surgeons are great with people but less experienced in bariatric surgery. You want to find a surgeon with a combination of these qualities, one who is both highly skilled and easy to talk to.

One of the places you can go to research bariatric surgeons is the American Society of Bariatric Surgery (www.asbs.org). We also offer a variety of resources through the Bariatric Learning Center website, listed below.
