“Children reconnect us to romance…..The passions … rise for them everyday….They compel us to see the world as an unusual place again. Sharing a life with them is sharing a life with lovers, explorers, scientists, pirates, poets. It makes for interesting mornings.” from Through the Children’s Gate.

Adam Gopnik brought this warm sensibility to NYPSI’s centennial celebration last Friday night; it was a stellar hit for psychoanlaysis. Gopnik, a writer for the New Yorker and author of seven books including The Table Comes First:Family,Franceand the Meaning of Food, may be one of the better spokesmen for psychoanalysis: not only does he speak openly about his personal treatment, but also his thoughtfulness, depth and candor speak eloquently to what a good upbringing with dedicated parents (and five siblings), commitment to his own family and what analytic work (appears to) facilitate.

Gopnik’s books often emerge from his life experiences, yet enlighten the world he inhabits. HisParisto the Moon makes deeply personal his five years inParis, initially with his first son, then after his daughter’s birth. The chapter, “The Rookie,” in which he tells of a five-year-old championship pitcher for aNew Yorkball team, arose from his bedtime stories to his son, whom, he feared, would know nothing of baseball growing up inParis. Through the Children’s Gate refers to the actual gate at Seventy-Fifth and Fifth, named by Olmsted and Vaughn, but in fact refers to his experience of returning to New York in 2000 after the Paris sojourn, the assault upon the City’s sensibility after theTwinTowers, all seen through the kaleidoscope of children’s eyes in the maelstrom and munificence ofNew York. Angels and Ages, overtly about Darwin’s and Lincoln’s upon modernity, also captures the personal influences of his mother’s love (as a geneticist) and his father’s (a professor literature and admirer of Lincoln). The Table Comes First, while pitched as a book on food, is more an account of family, friends and lovers around food.

Friday, Gopnik brought a keen eye to contemporary American life. He alsobrought a subtle sense of complexity to judging matters such as psychoanalysis. While he can recount with some humor, his unusual treatment with the famous “Dr. Grosskurth,” he recalls phrases of wisdom that have served him well over time. He spoke of how truly extraordinary ideas are met with initial disbelief, then years later with a sense as if we always knew this.

The audience asked questions and Gopnik answered, occasionally with a reflective, echoed afterward. When asked about whether his son Luke recalls his nightime The Rookie story, Gopnik answered, paused, then added a precious memory: Luke says that when someone mentions The Rookie, he still has the taste of milk in his three-year old mouth, the residua of a good feed.

NYPSI has found a way to truly celebrate the century of what it has contributed to psychoanalysis; Friday night at NYPSI, Adam Gopnik was a good feed, who will leave a taste in the mouths of those who attended. He enlivens the possibilities for NYPSI to be a center of psychoanalytic thoughtfulness and wisdom in New York.

Dear Colleagues,

This week posts on the international psychoanalytic website are in my opinion particularly unorthodox – by which I mean they address topics that we as analysts might never have thought about in terms of psychodynamics. I will list those that caught my eye first, followed by the entire menu. Also, to refresh your memory, I have reposted all of this week’s announcements, even though some may have been there in prior weeks.

1) As an example of a “surprise” topic, I direct you to the “Brief History of the To-Do List. Did you know that the unconscious is so involved?

Click Here to Read: This Article

2) There is in my mind an analogy between the mouse brain experiment finding that a cancer drug may be beneficial in Alzheimer’s disease and an action on a person’s part motivated by a seemingly unrelated unconscious wish/fear

Click Here to Read: This Article

3) Please view the wonderful art exhibited at the APsaA meeting in January if you have not seen it there, and if you have.

Click Here to Read: This Article

4) Conundrums, A Critique of Contemporary Psychoanalysis by Jon Mill is possibly a must read for psychoanalysts and others:

“This is the first book of its kind to offer a sustained critique of contemporary psychoanalytic thought favoring relational, postmodern, and intersubjective perspectives, which largely define American psychoanalysis today.”

Click Here to Read: This Article

5) Alicia Gutman wrote an excellent paper on the overdiagnosis of Asperger Syndrome in the Letters to the Editor Category. As a child psychiatrist, I concur with her and urge you to read the article and her letter.

Our guest writer is Dr. Charlie Gardner. He co-authored the piece on gender and psychiatry posted recently But, there are several personal connections with this piece on practicing psychiatry and psychoanalysis in a small town: first a connection with his grandfather and father; second a connection we have from the 1980_s. Charlie Gardner’s grandfather was an old-time country doc who did home visits; drove a flivver. Charlie’s dad taught at the Yale Psychiatric Institute (and taught one of my dream courses). Charlie was a resident at Cornell Westchester when I was on faculty *

Those of us who love poetry – and I assume that’s all of our readers – must have been saddened by the news that we have lost another luminary. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1996, Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska died on February 1 of this year at the age of 88.

There hasn’t been enough time to get permission to re-print her poems or her photo here, but I can recommend a definitive collection of her work. Poems New and Collected 1957-1997, translated by Stanislaw Baranczak and Clare Cavanagh, won the 1996 PEN Translation Prize and was published by Harcourt, Brace & Company in 1998. Because she published so few poems in ….

Dreams in the Elderly, Herbert J. Cogan, MSW, Member, IPTAR
Chief Psychiatric Social Worker, Brooklyn Mental Health Services of HIP
Former Adjunct Professor in Interpersonal Communications,
The New School

In this seminar, Dr. Herbert Cogan will discuss his dreams at age 91. His account is of interest because of how his dreams differ markedly and regularly from his dreams of several years earlier and from those of his patients. Unlike the latter, they may or may not connect to day residues, but in any case do not lend themselves further to dynamic associations, latent dream thoughts or ultimately to possible wishes. They act as signs, rather than symbols, to a seemingly random variety or combination of early memories.
